I talk about topics like gender equality, the new masculinity, male role models, men's issues, and 21st century parenting. Why do we need to talk about these issues? Up till now, most progress on gender equality has been about expanding women's rights and opportunities. This is of course a very good thing, but it also has also meant the end of the old 'male identity'. Meanwhile every pre-2000-something movie, every fairytale, every children's book advertises this old identity. So what are boys to do? Some have tried to rebrand the old male identity. But if you take, for example, a War Hero and strip the Hero part (because women can be heroes too), you just end up with something toxic. We need a new male identity, one built around acceptance, equality, and compassion.
